Disaster Coordination Office

Leading disaster risk reduction, preparedness, response, and recovery across Madang Province

Overview

The Disaster Coordination Office (DCO) in Madang Province serves as the lead agency for disaster risk reduction, preparedness, response, and recovery.

Operating under Papua New Guinea's National Disaster Risk Management framework, DCO coordinates with the National Disaster Centre, district administrations, local-level governments, NGOs, and community groups. By conducting hazard assessments, developing early-warning protocols, and spearheading community resilience initiatives, DCO ensures that Madang's diverse communities are better equipped to withstand and recover from earthquakes, floods, cyclones, landslides, and other natural hazards.

Disaster Preparedness Tips

Flood Preparedness

Know your evacuation routes, prepare an emergency kit with essential documents, and move to higher ground when advised. Avoid walking or driving through flood waters.

Cyclone Preparedness

Secure loose outdoor items, reinforce doors and windows, identify the strongest room in your home, and stock emergency supplies for at least 3 days.

Earthquake Safety

Drop, Cover, and Hold On during shaking. Move away from windows and heavy objects. After shaking stops, check for injuries and hazards before evacuating.

Landslide Awareness

Be alert during heavy rainfall, watch for signs like new cracks in ground or structures, and listen for unusual sounds. Evacuate immediately if you suspect landslide danger.
